USING MOZILLA FIREFOX TO BROWSE THE INTERNET

THESE NOTES ARE GENERALLY USED TO REINFORCE PERSONAL INSTRUCTION
AND ARE NOT DESIGNED TO TAKE THE PLACE OF LESSONS.

The Home page is the page you start on when you first get into Mozilla Firefox.  Click the “HOME” icon anytime you want to return there.

To start browsing the Web:  Here are 3 easy ways to view a web page.

I.  TYPE THE WEB ADDRESS DIRECTLY

·     Click on the current web address listed in the “web address section” (this is the white area to the right of your Toolbar icons --even if there are words there already, don’t worry, just click.)

·     Tap the DELETE key to erase the blue words

·     Type the website you were given and hit the ENTER key on the keyboard.

           (e.g.   www.website.com)

OR

II.  USE GOOGLE

·     Click in the GOOGLE search box on the upper right corner.

·     Type the subject or words that best describe what you are looking for

·     Tap the ENTER key.

·     You will see a list of sites that match the “criteria” of your search.  Some are closer “hits” than others.

·     To go to site, click on the BLUE words of the one you want to see.

·     When finished looking at a site, click the word BACK on the top left to get back to your Google search list.

·     To do another search for something different, click in the GOOGLE search box again.

 OR

III.   USE A SAVED BOOKMARK

·     Click on one of the Bookmarks that is on your “Personal Bookmark Toolbar”

        OR

·    Click on the word “Bookmarks” on the top Menu Bar and Click one of your saved bookmarks.

Some Basic Browsing Rules:

When you have finished reading a web page, DO NOT close it by clicking the X in the top right corner.  This might mistakenly close the entire program.  You should either

·        Click the Back button (top left on your toolbar) to go to a Web page you recently visited

·        Click the little black triangle right next to the Back button to see a list of most recently visited sites.  Then, click on the one you want to re-visit.

The Print icon:    Click this whenever you want to print your ENTIRE web page.

Print Preview:    This is helpful to click to see how many pages it would be if you print out your page.  You’d be surprised how long some of these web pages are.   Click the “FILE” menu – click “PRINT PREVIEW”.  You have an option of printing some or all of the web pages.

The Bookmarks menu:  To see what are in your bookmarks, click the Bookmarks menu on the top of your screen.

To add a web site to your list of Bookmarks:

1.        Go to the web site  (type www.website.com + tap ENTER)

2.        Click the " Bookmarks " menu (the word on the top of the screen);

3.        Click "Bookmark This Page"

4.        Click OK.

To GO BACK to a Bookmark

·     Click the Bookmarks menu (on top)

·     Click ONCE on a Bookmark that you see listed.

The Favorite Bookmarks Toolbar

There is a special toolbar into which you can put your favorites bookmarks.  It is below the main toolbar.  Its advantage is that these Bookmarks are always in view and, therefore, easier to go to.

·              Instead of adding a web site to your “Bookmarks,” DRAG the site directly on to your Favorite Bookmarks Toolbar.   You can DRAG a site by the little icon in the Address section and DROP it on the “Favorite Bookmarks Toolbar.”

Note:  If you want to EDIT the name of the bookmark, RIGHT CLICK on the bookmark, LEFT CLICK on “Properties” and type a new name – click OK.

The History icon:  To see an entire list of all the web sites visited within the last month, click the History button.    This will open the History folder along the left side of your window.  Click the History button again to close up the folder.

When you are finished using Mozilla, click the RED X in the UPPER RIGHT CORNER to close the program.
